The Music College of JiMei University(JMU) enjoys a long history. Its origin can be traced back to Art Department of Jimei Normal School, founded in 1925 by Chen Jiageng (Tan Kah Kee), a famous overseas Chinese patriotic leader. After over 70 years’ development, it expanded into The Art Education College of JMU in 1999 and renamed as The Music College of JMU in 2009.
President Xi Jinping，the Chairman of the 11thNational Committee of the Chinese People’s Political Consultative Conference Jia Qinlin, the then Vice Premier Li Lanqing and other leaders once inspected The Music College of JMU and gave instructions. Over the past more than 90 years, The Music College of JMU has produced a number of talents，including “Taiwan’s father of symphony” Cai Jikun, the renowned music educator and composer Zeng Yuyin, the artistic director of Yellow River Symphony Ochestra (the largest Chinese performing group in New Zealand) and the permanent conductor Li JianquanandPh.D supervisor of China Conservatory of Music and the Executive Deputy of Chinese Music Education Society Xie Jiaxin, creating cultural richness and being hailed as “the cradle of teacher resources for Fujian’s music education”.
The Music College of JMU now offers three undergraduate disciplines: Musicology, Music Performance and Dance Performance. There are also two professional master programs in Music Education and Arts. Five teaching departments are offered for following courses: Music Theory, Piano, Vocal Music, Instrumental Music and Dance.
The Music College of JMU has Fujian Provincial Arts Training Centre，Centre for National Music and Education (Humanities and Sciences Research Base at Fujian Provincial Colleges and Universities)，Music Research Institute and Arts Practical Department and Laboratory.
The College of Music of JMU currently has a faculty of 67 teachers (52 are full-time teachers, 15 associate professors), 75% of whom are PhDs or obtained mater degree. It now boasts 573 undergraduates and 37 graduate students toward a master’s degree.
The Music College has made obvious achievements in talents cultivation, scientific research, social service and international cooperation. The College holds almost 100 seminars, music concerts each year, forming a sound environment for humanities and arts. Students from The Music College have obtained over 150 awards in provincial and national competitions in various kinds and those stepping out of The Music College of JMU have got good jobs and welcome by employers.
In recent years, teachers of The Music College have received 3 projects supported by National Arts Foundation, 31 scientific and research programs at Provincial and Ministry levels, obtained 10 awards above Provincial level and publicized 10 teaching books. Having been active in the area of arts domestically and internationally, our teachers have gained Gold Award in World Choir Games, ECHO Klassik granted by Recording Industry Association of Germany and Gold Award in Pipa Youth Group (professional) of the 4thInternational Chinese Instrumental Competition.
Students and teachers have been invited to perform with Heart-to-heart Troupe of China Central Television and perform for different events: the Evening Gala of All-China Federation of Trade Unions for Commemorating the 70thAnniversary of the Founding of the People’s Republic of China, Beijing Modern Musical Festival, Gala of the 9thBRICS Summit in Xiamen, the Opening Ceremony of China Golden Rooster & Hundred Flowers Film Festival. The Music College of JMU has proactively promoted international cooperation. Students and teachers have made exchanges and performed in North America, Europe, Singapore, Malaysia, Thailand, Taiwan(China) and Hongkong(China’s Special Administrative Region), contributing to spreading national music and arts and popularizing fine music works.
Holding the principle of “ Founding the college in the spirit of Chen Jiageng (Tan Kah Kee) and cultivating talents with sincerity and perseverance, The Music College of JMU pursues development by exploring its inherent nature and features in a harmonious way and makes endless efforts in producing and attracting talents, developing disciplines, serving to the local, forging cooperation with the outside world and promoting culture, thus making contributions to JMU in advancing the development of the First Class University.
